Age 8 · Chores
Chores for 8-year-olds
At eight, many kids can handle a full household task instead of just one piece of it, especially when the routine is already familiar.
This is a useful age to expect follow-through: start the job, finish the job, and put away what was used. Reminders may still happen, but the task itself can require less supervision.
Good starting responsibilities
Chores an 8-year-old can handle with growing independence
- ✓ Load or unload the dishwasher, excluding items your household considers unsafe
- ✓ Fold and put away their own laundry
- ✓ Handle a regular pet-care job such as food, water, or simple cleanup
- ✓ Prepare a simple part of a meal with an adult handling higher-risk steps
- ✓ Rake leaves, pull weeds, or do other light yard work
- ✓ Empty household trash and recycling into the correct bins
- ✓ Vacuum their room and another assigned area
How to hand it over
Expect the whole job, not just the first step
1. Teach the complete routine
Include setup and cleanup so the child understands that putting supplies away is part of the job.
2. Let them try it without coaching
Once they know the task, give them a chance to complete it before stepping in with reminders.
3. Review what was missed
If something is unfinished, point them back to the job rather than silently completing it for them.
Safety & supervision
A bigger job can still have parts that belong to an adult.
Dishwashers, cooking, cleaners, pets, and yard work all vary by household. Decide in advance which parts are okay to do alone and which still require an adult, especially around heat, blades, chemicals, and powered equipment.
