Age 7 · Chores
Chores for 7-year-olds
At seven, many kids can follow a familiar household routine with less hands-on help and a little more responsibility for the result.
This is a good age to move from “help me with this” to “this is one of your jobs.” Keep the expectations specific and the schedule predictable.
Good starting responsibilities
Chores a 7-year-old can begin to own
- ✓ Sweep a small area and use a dustpan
- ✓ Pack part of their own lunch from approved choices
- ✓ Empty small trash cans and sort household recycling
- ✓ Water houseplants, porch plants, or a small garden area
- ✓ Put away groceries in familiar, reachable places
- ✓ Wipe counters and other safe surfaces with an approved cleaner
- ✓ Make their bed and reset their room to a simple standard
How to hand it over
Turn a familiar task into a regular responsibility
1. Pick a repeatable job
Choose something that comes up often enough for them to learn the routine through repetition.
2. Decide when it happens
Tie the job to a time or trigger, such as after dinner, before screen time, or on Saturday morning.
3. Check the result, not every step
Once the routine is familiar, let them complete it and review the finished job afterward.
Safety & supervision
More independence should still come with clear boundaries.
Keep heat, sharp tools, strong chemicals, heavy lifting, ladders, and powered equipment out of independent chores. For pet care or outdoor work, stay close until the routine is well established.
