How At Their Age works
Methodology
Every recommendation should tell you why. This is the framework we use to research, evaluate, explain, review, and update age-based guidance.
1. Reliable sources
We start with primary and authoritative information wherever possible: developmental research, recognized expert guidance, official rating systems, and manufacturer, publisher, developer, or platform information. When a source materially supports a recommendation, we aim to make it visible.
2. A consistent framework
We evaluate the same kinds of factors repeatedly so guidance can be compared across ages and topics. Depending on the decision, that can include safety, complexity, supervision, maturity, developmental fit, privacy, online interaction, and progression—how a responsibility or recommendation should change as the child grows.
3. Editorial judgment
Sources can tell us a great deal, but many parenting questions still require judgment. We separate factual evidence from our editorial interpretation and explain the reasons behind the recommendation. Commercial relationships do not determine the outcome.
4. AI-assisted drafting and human review
AI may help organize research, structure a draft, identify internal links, or summarize source material. It does not make the final publish decision. Final age recommendations, source verification, and editorial approval remain human-controlled steps.
5. Reviews, corrections, and updates
Guidance changes as research, products, ratings, platforms, and laws change. We review material changes, correct errors when we find them, and aim to make significant updates clear on the page.
