Video Games for 8-year-olds
At eight, gaming often becomes more social and more skill-based. The decision is no longer only whether the content looks child-friendly—it also includes online interaction, spending systems, difficulty, and how the game affects the rest of the day.
Some eight-year-olds begin asking for E10+ titles because friends or siblings play them. ESRB E10+ is generally suggested for ages 10 and up, so treat those requests as a reason to review the specific content rather than assuming the label already fits.
What to evaluate at this age
What usually matters most at age 8
Content beyond the art style
A colorful game can still contain fantasy violence, crude humor, fear, or user-created content that changes the experience.
Online teammates
Friends-only play is different from public matchmaking. Decide separately who can contact the child and whether voice or text chat is enabled.
Spending pressure
Cosmetics, passes, currencies, and random-item purchases can turn play into repeated requests to spend. Put the rule in place before the first purchase.
Stopping skills
Notice whether the child can finish a match, save progress, and transition away without a prolonged fight every time.
Use all three parts of the ESRB information
The age rating is the start of the decision, not the whole decision.
ESRB rating categories suggest age appropriateness: Everyone is generally suitable for all ages, Everyone 10+ for ages 10 and up, Teen for ages 13 and up, and Mature 17+ for ages 17 and up. Content descriptors explain what may have triggered the rating.
Interactive Elements flag features such as Users Interact, In-Game Purchases, purchases that include random items, location sharing, or unrestricted internet access. Those features may matter to your family even though they do not affect the ESRB age rating itself.
Online play changes the decision
Content, people, and money are three separate questions.
Keep communication limited to known people when possible. Review friend requests, usernames, privacy settings, user-generated content, and reporting/blocking tools together.
Use the controls before you need them
Gaming consoles and platforms commonly offer controls for play time, contacts, downloads, privacy, and purchases. Configure those settings before a problem occurs, then revisit them as the child demonstrates more judgment.
Healthy gaming is bigger than a timer
Protect the parts of the day that gaming should not replace.
Use consistent boundaries around bedtime, homework, meals, and physical activity. AAP guidance emphasizes quality and what media displaces, not just chasing one universal number for every child.
Current AAP guidance emphasizes high-quality media, family priorities, and whether digital use is crowding out sleep, physical activity, learning, relationships, and other important experiences. Parental controls and a family media plan can make those expectations concrete.
