At seven, many children can separate fantasy from reality more consistently, but that does not make every intense story easy to handle.
This is a good age to start teaching how ratings and descriptors work: they are information for making a decision, not a promise that every child of a certain age will react the same way.

What usually matters most at age 7
Intensity over body count
A long chase, trapped character, or threatening villain may be more upsetting than brief cartoon violence.
Humor and language
Rude humor and mild language are common in PG content. Decide what your family treats as imitation risk versus something to discuss.
Bullying and social cruelty
Stories may introduce more teasing, exclusion, embarrassment, and peer pressure. These can be useful conversation starters when the child is ready.
Real-world themes
Illness, death, divorce, disasters, or animal harm may need more support than fantasy conflict.
How to use ratings
Treat the rating as a flag to inspect, not the final answer.
G, PG, TV-G, and TV-PG cover a wide range. Read the rating descriptor and look at the specific themes before deciding.
For movies, the MPA rating block includes a letter rating and descriptors explaining the content that contributed to it. TV Parental Guidelines similarly provide age categories and, on many programs, content indicators. Those details are more useful than the label by itself.
Build judgment, not just access rules
When to watch together
You may not need to watch every familiar series together, but co-view new or more intense content until you know how your child handles it.
If something lands badly
Afterward, ask what felt scary, funny, confusing, or unfair. A short conversation can reveal more than guessing from the rating alone.
