Age 12 · Chores
Chores for 12-year-olds
At twelve, chores can start to feel more like a real share of household work. Many kids can manage multi-step jobs and keep track of a routine without an adult beside them.
A useful goal at this age is dependability: remembering the job, finishing all of it, and noticing when something needs attention.
A real share of household work
Chores a 12-year-old can manage more independently
- ✓ Plan and prepare a simple family meal, then clean the kitchen
- ✓ Handle personal laundry from hamper to closet
- ✓ Change bed linens and wash bedding on a schedule
- ✓ Clean an assigned bathroom with approved supplies
- ✓ Vacuum, sweep, or mop shared areas without step-by-step direction
- ✓ Manage weekly trash and recycling responsibilities
- ✓ Take primary responsibility for an established pet-care routine
Give them something to own
Set the standard, then leave room to manage it
1. Set the non-negotiables
Agree on the result, deadline, safety rules, and any parts of the task that still require an adult.
2. Let them choose the process
When timing is flexible, let them decide when and how to get the job done.
3. Hold the standard without redoing it
If the work is incomplete, send it back for another pass instead of quietly finishing it yourself.
Safety & supervision
Capability and permission are not the same thing.
A twelve-year-old may be physically able to use more tools and appliances, but your rules still matter. Be explicit about cooking, chemicals, blades, ladders, power equipment, pets, and outdoor work before turning over the job.
