Tools

Simple checklists and frameworks for making everyday parenting decisions with a little more clarity.

These tools are designed to support judgment, not replace it.

Quick tool

The five-question readiness check

Before handing over a new responsibility, device, privilege, or bit of independence, ask:

  • Can they explain the rule or expectation back to you?
  • Have they shown the underlying skill with you nearby?
  • Can they handle a predictable mistake without panicking or hiding it?
  • Do they know when they must stop and ask for help?
  • Is there a smaller version of the responsibility you can try first?

Conversation starter

Before a new app, game, or device

  • Who can they communicate with?
  • What can they buy or spend inside it?
  • What information does the service ask them to share?
  • What happens when something uncomfortable or confusing appears?
  • Where and when does the device belong in your family routine?

Start somewhere practical

Build responsibility with chores.

The chores framework is a good place to practice gradual handoff, clear standards, and age-appropriate supervision.
